Piñon Hills is where the desert starts climbing into the mountains. West of Phelan along Highway 138, the land rises into the foothills of the San Gabriels, the Joshua trees give way to the pinyon pines and junipers the community is named for, and the elevation buys cooler summers and the occasional winter snow. It is the quietest of the High Desert's foothill communities, and the closest to Wrightwood.
Piñon Hills grew up along the Pearblossom Highway — Highway 138 — as the westernmost High Desert community in San Bernardino County, sitting about 15 miles west of the Cajon Pass and 28 miles east of Palmdale, close to the Los Angeles County line. Like Phelan it never incorporated; the two communities share the Phelan Piñon Hills Community Services District for water, parks and recreation.
Piñon Hills is rural: large parcels, custom and ranch-style homes, horse properties, and long views in every direction, at more than 4,000 feet of elevation. Highway 138 is the main road through it, connecting east to Phelan and I-15 and west toward Highway 2 up to Wrightwood and on to the Antelope Valley.
The community center is the local gathering place. Schools are part of the Snowline Joint Unified School District, shared with Phelan and Wrightwood.
