Oak Hills is the High Desert's gateway neighborhood — the rolling, juniper-dotted hills at the very top of the Cajon Pass, between Hesperia and the summit, where I-15 and Highway 395 come together. For commuters it is the first exit into the desert, and for everyone else it is some of the most sought-after acreage in the region.
Oak Hills sits just north of the Cajon Summit, on the route that every wagon, railroad and highway into the High Desert has followed since the 1800s, and it stayed ranch and rural land while the valley cities grew up around it. Its modern identity is recent: it remains unincorporated, and its landmark public building, Oak Hills High School on Cataba Road, opened in August 2009 and now serves roughly 2,400 students.
Oak Hills is mostly custom: large lots, newer estate-style homes, horse properties, and ridgeline views toward the San Gabriel and San Bernardino Mountains. Ranchero Road and Caliente Road are the main streets, and the Summit shopping area at Ranchero Road and I-15 covers the everyday needs. Because it sits at the top of the pass, it is also a little higher and cooler than the valley floor.
