Adelanto sits on the northwest edge of the Victor Valley, past Victorville along Highway 395, and it has long been the High Desert's value play: newer homes, larger lots, and prices that let buyers get more house than they could closer to the freeway. The city's motto — "the City with Unlimited Possibilities" — says a lot about how it sees itself.
Adelanto was founded in 1915 by E.H. Richardson, the inventor of what became the Hotpoint electric iron, who sold his patent and bought the land for $75,000 with the idea of building one of Southern California's first planned communities. The name is Spanish for "progress" or "advance," and it was first given to the post office that opened here in 1917. Adelanto incorporated in 1970 — at the time the smallest city in San Bernardino County — and became a charter city in November 1992, the same year the neighboring Air Force base closed and was reborn as the Southern California Logistics Airport.
Much of Adelanto's housing is recent, built in tracts along Highway 395 and Bellflower Street, with plenty of open land still around it. The Southern California Logistics Airport borders the city to the east and is one of the region's largest employment and industrial centers, and Highway 395 gives Adelanto its own route down to I-15 without going through the center of Victorville.
City Hall is on Air Expressway. Elementary schools are run by the Adelanto Elementary School District, with high-school students in the Victor Valley Union High School District.
